Activities: neighbourhood containers

Almost every working day, a neighbourhood container is brought into the Avalex area, so that residents can separate their waste closer to home. The first step is to look for the most suitable location together with the residents. You can read all about it here!

Below you can see at which locations the neighbourhood containers will be placed, changed or have maintenance work done in the near future.

What is a good location for a neighbourhood container?

When the municipality decides that new neighbourhood containers should be placed in a certain area, Avalex’s location managers start looking for suitable locations. It is also important to know how many households can be served by one neighbourhood container.

A neighbourhood PMD container is enough for 75 households. A paper container can serve 250 households and one textiles container is good for 900 households! The site manager will have an overview of underground cables and pipes. We work around that for safety reasons, as a container may not be placed too close to the electricity grid. We also make sure that the walking distance to a neighbourhood container is within certain parameters and that it is easily accessible for the refuse collection lorry.

How can residents contribute to the planning process?

A location plan is drawn up with the criteria in mind. This plan is presented to the neighbourhood residents at special residents’ evenings and through the digital platform on our website. Residents are free to share their views on the proposed locations.

Test slots are dug at the locations to check that there are indeed no underground cables and pipes. Soil research is also carried out so that we know in good time whether the soil is contaminated.

A new plan is drawn up based on the residents’ views and the results of the preliminary investigation. After that, residents who still do not agree with the choice of location have six weeks to submit their objections to the municipality. The municipality will assess their views and determine a definitive plan. Then the neighbourhood containers can go into the ground!
